Excursion: Exploring the past, present and future of space exploration!

At the end of Term 1, Year 6 students attended an action packed excursion in the city of Sydney to complement their learning in our Science unit: Spaced Out. We attended an IMAX session and attended an Indigenous Astronomy experience at the Sydney Observatory.

Hubble 3D is a spectacular film about the development, launch and maintenance of the Hubble Telescope. It gives students great insights into space exploration and how important 'reaching for the stars' both literally and figuratively really is.

After a brisk walk through Darling Harbour and the Barangaroo development area, we arrived at the Sydney Observatory shortly before lunch. After a relaxing lunch in the shade on Observatory Hill, we entered the grounds of the Observatory to begin our session.

Students completed a discussion about the necessity of learning about the indigenous perspective of astronomy and why it is so crucial to include that definition of space as well as the definitions provided to us by astronomers and scientists. This deep respect for indigenous perspective was very evident in student participation and responses at the Observatory.
